Obituary for Rufus Slayden Johnson Jr.
Rufus Sladen Johnson, Jr., 92 of Crossville, Tennessee and formerly of Clarksville, Tennessee passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tennessee.
Rufus was born Monday, November 2, 1925 in Clarksville, Tennessee and he was the son of the late Audrey (Shelby) and Rufus Sladen Johnson, Sr.
Rufus graduated Clarksville High School at the age of 17 in 1943 and joined the United States Marine Corps, serving in World War II From 1943 to 1946 in the United States and the Pacific area of Japan, China, and Korea. He married Nancy Holloman in 1943 and they had a happy life and four children. Rufus attended Georgia Tech, graduating in 1950 with two degrees in Architecture. Returning to Clarksville, he became active in community business, civics, planning, and Methodist religious affairs, chairing or presiding over many. He designed many medical, educational, business, religious, and manufacturing facilities. Rufus was an architect, aviator, achiever, adventurer, advocate, and an avid outdoorsman where he always enjoyed life. In 1983, he married Wilma (Harper) Kendrick who has been a joy and the light of his life. After retiring, he, his wife, and her 10 year old son, flew his plane over Cuba to the Cayman Islands where they lived for three and a half years. There he served a two year contract as executive architect for the Island government. As a commercial pilot, he flew charters throughout the Caribbean, including Bahamas, Jamaica, Windward Islands, South and Central America, and the United States, returning to the United States in 1985.
Rufus is survived by Wife, Wilma Johnson; Four children, Nancy Rue Jenkins, Linda Garrison, Rudy Johnson, and Carol Spence; Four Stepsons, Chris Kendrick, Robert Kendrick, Eddie Kendrick, and Mark Kendrick; Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved, cherished, adored, and admired them all.
At his request, he is to be cremated and his ashes to be scattered by his family in the special places that he enjoyed life. No memorial planned per his wishes.
